Retaining Walls in Austin & Hill Country: Materials, Drainage, Cost
From limestone block to poured concrete, here is how to design retaining walls that actually hold back Austin's tough terrain.

Why Austin needs more retaining walls than most cities
The Balcones Escarpment runs right through town. Lakeway, West Lake Hills, Dripping Springs, and most Hill Country lots have grade changes that demand walls. And once you add Austin clay's lateral pressure, "any wall" will not do.
Retaining wall materials (best to worst for Austin)
1. Poured reinforced concrete — tallest spans, longest life. $55 – $110/face sq ft 2. Segmental block (Allan Block, Keystone) — fast install, great look. $35 – $60/sq ft 3. Lueders limestone (drystack or mortared) — Hill Country authentic. $45 – $90/sq ft 4. Boulder walls — informal yards, slopes. $30 – $55/sq ft 5. Timber/railroad tie — avoid; 10-yr lifespan in Texas heat
The 4 must-haves on every TSB wall
- Drainage gravel + perforated pipe behind every wall over 24"
- Geogrid reinforcement for any wall over 4 ft tall
- Compacted base — 6" min, 4× the block depth
- Engineer-stamped plans required by Austin code over 4 ft exposed face
Permit requirements in Austin
City of Austin requires a building permit for retaining walls over 4 ft (measured from bottom of footing to top of wall). Hays and Williamson counties have similar limits. We handle the engineering and submittal.
Average retaining wall cost in Austin
- 30 linear ft × 3 ft tall block wall: $4,500 – $7,800
- 50 linear ft × 5 ft tall engineered: $14,000 – $24,000
- Lueders limestone garden wall (24"): $50 – $80/linear ft
